I have encountered many questions on essential oils from people surrounding me and also my customers. One of the most common questions I am asked is “How is doTERRA different than other brands?”.
The 2 main reasons are how doTERRA essential oils being sourced and tested.
When it comes to sourcing essential oils, the terrain and soil of origin matter.
If a field is sprayed with toxic chemical, or these chemicals are added to the soil, it affects the chemistry of the plants. The distillation process, temperature, and the use of toxic solvents and chemicals for extraction also affect the purity and potency of the essential oil.
doTERRA truly appreciate the beauty of the nature, hence, doTERRA’s oils aren’t just grown in the US. They are grown throughout the world. doTERRA’s oils are tested numerous times to find the natural habitat that is best for that oil.
For example, doTERRA’s lemon oil comes from Italy, lavender from France, Peppermint from Washington.
Because doTERRA’s oils are sourced world-wide there is no USDA organic seal on it. But this doesn’t stop doTERRA from growing the plants without pesticides or other chemicals.
Essential oils aren’t regulated by any governing agency. Therefore, companies are free to do any (or no) testing on their products. So any registered trademarks that you will see from large companies, like doTERRA’s CPTG® certification, or Young Living’s Seed to Seal® is their own. It is the company’s way of showing their consumers that their oils are tested. And then it’s up to us to know the differences and to decide for ourselves.
The term ‘therapeutic grade’ is simply insufficient to identify a level of quality. There exists, therefore, two very different distinctly different views.
- Compromised sourcing is permissible and synthetic additives are acceptable components.
- True holistic healing requires unprocessed oils that are sourced directly from nature with nothing added.
doTERRA oils are scientifically tested and proven safe to be used!

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®
doTERRA’s CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®* quality protocol employs five different analytical methods to ensure doTERRA’s essential oils are both pure (extracts contain only the volatile aromatic compounds of a plant), and potent (extracts have consistent chemical composition from batch to batch).
doTERRA’s state-of-the-art lab uses the most advanced testing methods to verify the purity and potency of its essential oils.
- After the aromatic compounds are distilled from the plant material, each batch is scrupulously tested to ensure that it meets CPTG® standards.
- doTERRA developed this rigorous criteria to certify that its oils contain no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants. Utilizing its own facilities, as well as trusted third-party labs (including the Aromatic Plant Research Center, APRC), doTERRA essential oils undergo the CPTG process to ensure that customers receive the highest quality oil, every time.
Each batch of doTERRA oils go through a battery of rigorous and definitive tests. These tests include the following:
- organoleptic assessments
- specific gravity
- gas chromatography / mass spectroscopy (GC/MS)
- FTIR Scan (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy)
- optical rotation
- Refractive Index
- contamination testing
- stability testing
Now, on https://sourcetoyou.com website you will be able to input the quality ID found on the bottom of your doTERRA bottle and view GC/MS test results from an independent, verified third party lab. So if you want any evidence as to what your bottle contains – you now have access to it!
